Match Report Wearside FC 5 v 0 SAFC Foundation Pumas
9th May 2010
This certainly was a game of two halves, we were under no illusions that this would be a difficult match and in the first half Wearside showed why they are pushing for promotion this season with a display of accurate crossing and clinical finishing. The game was only eight minutes old when Wearside struck, though there was a huge element of luck in this goal. A Wearside striker was bearing down on the goal, Josh made a tackle which seemed to have taken the sting out of the shot but the spin on the ball took it over Johnny who was powerless to stop it. It only took two minutes for Wearside to strike again from a corner with a strong header finding the back of the net. The Pumas were playing decent football but were intimidated by Wearside who were strong and decisive on the ball. Wearside's next two goals also came from headers, one a free kick and the other a cross from the byline. Wearside completed the first half with a goal struck hard and low from outside the box. Five nil at half time, things had to improve in the second half. During his half time talk, Paul clearly gave the lads the "hairdryer" because along with this and a slight reshuffle the Pumas emerged in the second half a different team and proceeded to play the better football. Passes were reaching their target, tackles were forcefully made and shots made it goalwards. Wearside were limited to a few breaks but the bulk of the second half was played in Wearside's half. Unfortunately the Pumas couldn't quite manage a goal but came very close. On seventy minutes the score remained five nil and the first half was "best forgotten" but the second half was full of potential and showed what the Pumas are capable of.
Man of the Match - Ryan Fowler, had to deputise at short notice for Johnny in goal after he sustained an injury. His second half clean sheet demonstrates what an accomplished keeper he is becoming.
